Juneau Alaska Glacier Tours

Juneau, Alaska Glacier Tours

Juneau sits at the edge of the Juneau Icefield, one of the largest icefields in North America, which means glacier access here is measured in minutes, not hours. Tours range from 2 hours to 7 hours and from $209 to from $739 per person, covering everything from guided hikes to dog sled runs on the glacier itself.

Why Juneau, Alaska for Glacier Tours

Juneau is one of the few places in the world where you can reach an active glacier by helicopter in under 30 minutes from a cruise ship dock. The Juneau Icefield feeds dozens of glaciers, including Mendenhall Glacier and the Taku Glacier, both accessible on tours departing directly from the city. The Tongass National Forest — the world's largest temperate rainforest — surrounds the icefield, which means the scenery on the flight in and the hike out is as dramatic as the ice itself. Juneau's position as Alaska's capital also means infrastructure is reliable: purpose-built expedition vessels, trained glacier guides, and helicopter operators with established safety protocols are all based here year-round.

What's Included

Inclusions vary by tour. Helicopter tours include the flight to and from the glacier. The Mendenhall Glacier Ice Adventure Tour includes snacks, water, and a hot beverage after the outing. All guided glacier tours include a professionally trained guide on the ice. The Tracy Arm fjord cruise operates aboard a high-speed expedition vessel. Gear specifics are confirmed at booking for each tour type.

FAQ

Questions? Answered.

How far in advance should cruise ship passengers book glacier tours in Juneau?

Book at least one hour after your ship's scheduled arrival time, and confirm the tour ends no less than 45 minutes before your ship's departure. If your port time changes after booking, contact the operator immediately to adjust your reservation.

What is the longest glacier tour available, and what does it cover?

The Tracy Arm-Fords Terror Wilderness & Glacier Explorer runs 7 hours and travels by jetboat to the Twin Sawyer Glaciers inside the Tracy Arm Wilderness Area. The Mendenhall Glacier Guided Hike is a close second at 6 hours, covering 6–7 miles round-trip on foot through the Tongass National Forest.

Several tours carry specific requirements. The Mendenhall Glacier Canoe Paddle & Hike requires guests to be at least 12 years old and weigh no more than 250 pounds. The Mendenhall Glacier Ice Adventure Tour sets the maximum weight at 240 pounds and the minimum at 90 pounds. The Mendenhall Glacier Guided Hike is open to guests 10 and older who can complete a 6–7 mile hike in proper ankle-support footwear.

How much time do helicopter glacier tours actually spend on the ice?

The Helicopter Glacier Trek and the Helicopter Glacier Ice Climbing Tour both include 2 hours on the glacier, with 30 minutes of helicopter flight time in each direction.

What is the most affordable way to reach Mendenhall Glacier?
